ChatGPT Moves Closer to the Patient Chart

ChatGPT is moving closer to the patient chart—connecting authorized EHR context with evidence and clinical workflow.

OpenAI has announced an Epic integration for ChatGPT for Healthcare. It brings authorized patient context into ChatGPT and, in supported organizational deployments, allows ChatGPT to be embedded within the EHR workflow.

Clinicians can review notes, laboratory results, medication changes, specialist recommendations and outstanding follow-up needs, with responses pointing back to supporting chart information.

A separate Healthcare Public Data plugin connects official sources including PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, DailyMed, RxNorm and CMS Coverage. Together, these capabilities bring patient records, evidence, medications, trials and coverage information closer to the same working environment.

My takeaway

This is a consequential step toward an intelligent clinical workspace. Useful Digital Health depends on bringing interoperable data, intelligent interpretation, real clinical workflows, governance and competent users together.

Integration makes those foundations more important. A fragmented, duplicated, outdated or poorly structured record remains a weak basis for clinical interpretation, however fluent the summary sounds.

Data quality, provenance and clinician AI literacy therefore belong at the centre of implementation. Teams need to understand where information came from, what may be missing, and when to verify the underlying record.

The potential lies in connecting AI to the everyday work of care. Its value must be established in practice, through careful deployment and clinical oversight.

Availability matters: EHR integration is for eligible organizational deployments, not individual accounts. Embedded workflows depend on supported configurations and authorized access.

Question for the audienceIs this the beginning of BigTech–EHR convergence—and will more integrations follow in the weeks and months ahead?
