GVC of the Day, October 9, 2026: A $1.8 billion push to build experimental data for predictive AI biology.

The $1.8B Biology Data Push

The next frontier model may be limited less by compute than by the quality of the experimental biology available to train it.

Biohub, U.S. government agencies and industry partners have expanded the Virtual Biology Initiative to generate standardized, AI-ready measurements of how cells behave and respond to interventions. Google DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs and Meta are among the partners.

The headline $1.8 billion combines funding, existing datasets, computation and measurement technology; it is not a single new cash grant. The aim is an open resource that can help researchers train models to predict cellular responses across more genes, drugs and conditions.

My takeaway

Biology does not have an equivalent of the internet’s enormous, relatively uniform text corpus. Experiments vary by protocol, instrument and context. Better models therefore need better, comparable measurements of biological reality—not only more parameters or faster chips.

A predictive virtual cell remains an ambition, not an established result. Its value will depend on whether predictions hold up in independent experiments and useful biomedical decisions.

Question for the audienceIf you had the next $1 billion to accelerate AI-driven biology, would you fund bigger models, more compute or better experimental data?
